The appliance of science

Tarmac approached us with a ‘really difficult problem’. They needed to recruit a number of recent Science graduates. Their target was to attract enough suitable candidates to shortlist 18 to invite to an Assessment Centre.
Now, everyone knows that there is a major shortage of high calibre Science graduates and Tarmac’s expectations of success were not very high.
First of all, we needed to plan a cost-effective way to reach the maximum number of potential candidates. We utilised the email messaging services provided by the two leading graduate recruitment publishers – Prospects and Milkround. This enabled us to email suitable candidates (in this case, those with a relevant degree at 2:1 or higher). The downside of this approach was the strict word count limitations. We therefore supported the email with a dedicated microsite, providing role profiles, information about Tarmac and the facility to apply online. Posters were also produced and we arranged with selected universities for these to be prominently displayed.
The posters and the microsite home page needed a striking visual theme to quickly capture candidates’ interest. Given the scientific nature of the roles, we produced a molecular structure to demonstrate the attributes of ideal candidates and translated the headline into a scientific equation. The design can be seen by clicking the preview above.
The results of the campaign were spectacular! Tarmac received over 230 applications and of such high quality, that they invited 35 candidates to Assessment Centre (almost double their target).
